PLAYER UPDATES Provided By SportsBuff.com
Player: A.J. Burnett SP, Free Agent 11/19/08, Time: 8:02 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: Boston Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein spoke with Burnett's agent by phone Tuesday to express the team's interest in the free-agent, according to ESPN.com. Epstein's decision to reach out and call agent Darek Braunecker was a clear sign that the Red Sox are ready to jump into the fray and compete with Toronto, the New York Yankees and several other clubs for Burnett, an 18-game winner for the Blue Jays in 2008. Braunecker told 1050 ESPN New York's Andrew Marchand on Wednesday that he had indeed heard from the Red Sox and that "there is mutual interest."
 Analysis:

There is always the possibility Epstein's "interest" is just a ploy to drive up the price tag for the Yankees, Orioles and Blue Jays. With how much starting pitching depth Boston has, that theory is probably accurate. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Mike Mussina SP, N.Y. Yankees Yankees 11/19/08, Time: 7:57 pm
 Status:
Cold
News: As expected, New York Yankees pitcher Mike Mussina has decided to retire, according to a ESPN.com, which was citing a baseball source with knowledge of the situation. Mussina informed the Yankees last week he would give them a decision by the end of this week. Mussina, who turns 40 next month, spent the last eight seasons with the Yankees after pitching for the Baltimore Orioles for the first 10 years of his career. His 270 wins rank second among all active right-handers, behind only Greg Maddux. In the final start of his career, he pitched six shutout innings against the Boston Red Sox to finish off the first 20-win season of his career, according to the report. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, he's just the fifth pitcher since 1900 to win 20 games or more in the final season of his career -- and the first since Sandy Koufax in 1967. (SportsBuff.com)

News: According to the New York Post, the Cubs are expected to try to trade Marquis.
 Analysis:

With the Cubs re-signing Ryan Dempster and interested in Jake Peavy, Marquis has become expendable. (SportsBuff.com)

News: Murphy suffered a sprained right knee in the Arizona Fall League.
 Analysis:

Player: Mark Teixeira 1B, Free Agent 11/18/08, Time: 5:17 pm
News: The Orioles contacted Teixeira's agent, Scott Boras, according to the Baltimore Sun.
 Analysis:

It is unlikely that Teixeira ends up in Baltimore but he is from Maryland so that could factor in on his decision of where to sign. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Milton Bradley RF, Free Agent 11/18/08, Time: 5:04 pm
News: According to ESPN.com, Bradley has been targeted by the Blue Jays.

Steady

The Padres, in the midst of dumping payroll, have been seeking a trade partner for Peavy, their 2007 Cy Young Award winner. Wren said he called off the talks with the Padres after the two sides could not agree on the final pieces. "We had our last discussion with San Diego yesterday [Thursday] and let them know that if the final names we were discussing wouldn't get it done, we would move on to other opportunities, other possibilities," Wren said Friday, according to FoxSports.com. (SportsBuff.com)

News: Helton, who is still recovering from back surgery, is slowly making progress in his return to baseball activities.

News: K-Rod traveled to New York City to be checked by doctors, according to El Universal.
 Analysis:

 Status:
Probable
News: Lowell is recovering on schedule from hip surgery, according to the Boston Globe.
 Analysis:

Lowell played in just 113 games last year, but did provide 17 homers and a .274 average. At 34 years old and some injury history, he is on the down side of his career. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Casey Blake 3B, Free Agent 11/16/08, Time: 7:26 am
 Status:
Steady
News: The Twins could make an offer to Blake as soon as next week, according to the Star Tribune.
 Analysis:

Blake has shown moderate power through his career. Minnesota is in need of any power to help Justin Morneau and to a lesser extent Joe Mauer in the lineup. Blake topped 20 homers for the third time in his career in 2008. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Bob Howry RP, Free Agent 11/16/08, Time: 7:23 am
 Status:
Steady
News: The Giants are interested in Howry to add to their bullpen depth, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
 Analysis:

Howry had a penchant for starting slowly with the Cubs and in 2008, he never made it up for the slow start. He ended up with a 5.35 ERA and 90 hits in 70.2 innings. Prior to 2008, he had three consecutive seasons of solid middle relief pitching. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Rafael Furcal SS, Free Agent 11/16/08, Time: 7:21 am
 Status:
Steady
News: There is mutual interest between the Giants and Furcal, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Player: Randy Johnson SP, Free Agent 11/16/08, Time: 7:18 am
 Status:
Steady
News: The Cubs could be interested in bringing in Johnson for a one-year deal, according to the Chicago Tribune.
 Analysis:

Johnson once pitched for Cub manager Lou Piniella in Seattle. Despite being 45 years old, Johnson struck out 174 batters in 184 innings with the Diamondbacks in 2008. He'd replace Ryan Dempster in the Cubs rotation. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Francisco Rodriguez RP, Free Agent 11/16/08, Time: 7:15 am
 Status:
Steady
News: Although the Mets have made it known that they are looking for a closer and Rodriguez is the top closer on the free agent market, the New York Daily News says the team is concerned by K-Rod's dip in velocity.
 Analysis:

K-Rod did nail down a record 62 saves, but his 77 K's in 68.2 innings were down from past seasons. He allows more walks than you'd like from a top closer, but some team will give him big money for his 194 saves over the past four season. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Darrell Rasner SP, Florida Marlins 11/16/08, Time: 7:10 am
 Status:
Cold
News: The Yankees sold Rasner to Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles of the Japanese League, according to ESPN.com.
 Analysis:

Rasner started 20 games for the starter-deprived Yankees in 2008 and compiled a 5.40 ERA with five wins. With the Yankees going after every free agent starter alive, there was probably no space on the roster for Rasner. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: A.J. Burnett SP, Free Agent 11/16/08, Time: 7:07 am
 Status:
Hot
News: The Yankees are reportedly willing to top the Blue Jays offer of four years and $54 million to Burnett, according to Newsday.
 Analysis:

In the last three years, Burnett has a 2.88 ERA at Yankee stadium, but only four starts. He can sparkle when he plays, but he has a long injury history. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Derek Lowe SP, Free Agent 11/16/08, Time: 7:04 am
 Status:
Steady
News: According to Newsday, the Yankees are aggressively pursuing Lowe, along with every other able bodied starter who is a free agent.
 Analysis:

Lowe has thrown for at leas 180 innings in each of the last seven seasons and topped 200 five times. His ERA has been below four for the last four seasons, but they were all in the National League. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Raul Ibanez LF, Free Agent 11/15/08, Time: 12:04 pm
News: According to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik expects Ibanez to consider their offer before testing free agency.
 Analysis:

Ibanez hit .293 with 23 homers and 110 RBI last season with Seattle. The Mets have been rumored to have interest in Ibanez but still prefer to find a right handed bat if they chose to go after a free agent outfielder. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Edgar Renteria SS, Free Agent 11/15/08, Time: 12:00 pm
News: According to his agent Barry Meister, St. Louis and San Francisco are two possible destinations for Renteria.
 Analysis:

It makes sense as the the Giants and Cardinals both have vacancies at shortstop. Renteria hit .270 with ten homers and 55 RBI with the Tigers last season. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Will Ohman RP, Free Agent 11/15/08, Time: 11:56 am
News: St. Louis has had preliminary contract discussions with free agent reliever Will Ohman, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
 Analysis:

Ohman appeared in 83 games for the Braves last season, striking out 53 batters and recording a 4-1 record in 58.2 innings. Ohman would be a big help to the Cardinals middle relief and an upgrade over Randy Flores. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Luis E. Gonzalez LF, Free Agent 11/15/08, Time: 11:50 am
News: Gonzalez is officially a free agent after playing one season in Florida with the Marlins.
 Analysis:

The 19-year veteran is clearly on the final stage of his career and could potentially retire if there is no interest in his services. Gonzalez hit only .261 with eight homers and 47 RBI last season, failing to hit double digit home runs for the first time in 12 seasons. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Rich Aurilia 1B, Free Agent 11/15/08, Time: 11:44 am
News: Aurilia officially filed for free agency on Friday.
 Analysis:

Aurilia hit .283 with ten home runs and 52 RBI with the Giants last season. Aurilia could sign back with San Francisco next season but holds limited fantasy value as wherever he lands, it will likely be in a utility role. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Carlos Quentin OF, Chi. White Sox White Sox 11/15/08, Time: 11:40 am
News: Quentin has resumed batting practice after having season-ending wrist surgery in September.
 Analysis:

Quentin was a legit MVP candidate before getting hurt, batting .288 with 36 homers and 100 RBI. Expect Quentin to produce similar numbers next season. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Jeremy Bonderman SP, Detroit Tigers 11/15/08, Time: 11:37 am
News: Bonderman, who underwent surgery over the summer to remove a rib, has finally began to throw again.
 Analysis:

Bonderman had won over ten games in each of the last four years but due to the injury, he finished the season at only 3-4 with a 4.29 ERA in 12 starts. Expect Bonderman to be ready for Spring Training and once again record over ten wins. (SportsBuff.com)
